Starting from scratch: three years in Spain
The story of four asylum seekers.
Lewis, Riyadh, Mamadou and Aminat arrived in Spain at the end of 2017 after leaving their respective countries for security reasons. They lived together as asylum seekers at the Seville Refugee Reception Center (CAR) for six months. There they were interviewed for the first time for this report in 2018.
Now, with their applications resolved, they have been interviewed again to find out how their lives have changed after admission or denial of asylum and how they live the process of integration in a new culture that many define as "starting from scratch."
Spain is the third country in the European Union that receives the most asylum applications. Despite this, only 5% of applications for international protection are resolved favorably (compared to 33% of the community average).
34% of applications are resolved with the granting of a residence permit for humanitarian reasons. This permit, unlike international protection, has temporary validity. Currently, it is granted mainly to Venezuelan citizens.
